Leopards, symbols of our natural heritage, are vanishing at an alarming rate. In the past few decades, their population has declined by 75% due to habitat loss and human activity.
This isn't just a loss of a species; it's a reflection of our relationship with the planet.
You can help us make a difference for this and other species. Welcome to the Landmark Foundation.
‘A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.’
Aldo Leopold
We're Spotting a Solution
We are concerned about all Biodiversity Patterns and Processes. Wildlife and wild places are under severe threat. Leopard habitats and the species are vanishing, and with them, the balance of our ecosystems.
These environments are under severe threat from human activities such as habitat destruction, desertification and deforestation, poaching and unsustainable harvesting and species persecutions, pollution and water resource degradation and climate change.
If unchecked and unmitigated, we risk the extinction of leopards together with the demise of many other species and habitats, leading to a collapse of the ecosystems they support, with direct impacts on biodiversity and human livelihoods.
Just like a leopard's spots, our efforts are diverse and interconnected. By protecting leopards, their habitats, their cohabitating biodiversity, we preserve the intricate web of life they are part of.
Why we focus on leopards
Leopards are the last remaining to top predator in the region we focus our efforts on; the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. They occupy to top of the food chain in the region.
As such, they are a keystone species occupying the top trophic position in the environment. Their habitats overlap with production agriculture where the face the brunt of the human wildlife conflicts, together with the treat to many other carnivore species and by-catch species from lethal controls.
These human impacts have resulted in the species being severely threatened in our region of operations, as elsewhere, and as with many other species. It is through the conservation of this top carnivore species that the conservation of entire trophic pyramids are affected.

Who We Are:
Since The Landmark Foundation was established in 2004, we have been pro-active guardians of Southern Africa's natural heritage.
Specializing in wildlife conservation, ecological research, and promoting sustainable coexistence between humanity and nature, learning and changemaking advocacy to promote the conservation of our ecological assets and we stand as a beacon of hope and action in the conservation landscape.
The Chamlion - Our Mascot
The chameleon is featured as our mascot. It is a species that demonstrated the fragility of the ecological realm.
It blends between the between the floral and faunal world, present the kaleidoscope of diversity of the natural world. It also the epitome of fragility, demonstrating the sensitivity to the vagrancies of our human impact on their species.
Pollution, habitat destruction and human caused mortality of the species that have seen them disappear from our habitats in the current generation, witnessed by the exhilaration of still stumbling upon them.
Their fragility to human impacts is reflected in the plight of many species, not least the leopar
Our Mission:
To foster our ecological heritage through supporting the conservation economy, and ecological governance, that not only preserves but enhances Southern Africa’s rich biodiversity and landscapes. We are committed to combating the major threats posed by unsustainable human activities through impactful projects and community-driven initiatives.
Key insights and highlights
Conservation Impact Highlights
The Landmark Foundation, dedicated to conservation within Southern Africa, operates at the intersection of biodiversity preservation and sustainable human-coexistence. We focus on human wildlife conflicts, top -trophic species, especially leopards, learning and change-making, and rewilding habitats.
Our efforts focus on rescuing leopards, ecological research, facilitating ecological learning, increasing habitat for wildlife species, advocating change-making behaviour to nature, and encouraging ecologically sensitive market mechanism. We support innovation, especially those innovations that encourage changed management.
We have become a world leader in leopard and landscape management research. Our leopard project is probably the largest of its kind in the world. We are at the forefront of understanding and protecting these majestic creatures and their habitats.
Why Landmark?
Our Mission
Since its inception in 2004, the Landmark Foundation has been at the vanguard of fostering a conservation economy, championing the preservation of Southern Africa's unparalleled natural landscapes against the backdrop of escalating human-induced threats.
This mission stems from a profound recognition that these landscapes, rich in biodiversity and aesthetic value, are under siege—primarily due to exploitative land uses aimed at short-term financial gains.
Our commitment is to pioneer a transformative shift in perception and behavior, advocating for a model where the intrinsic value of biodiversity and landscape conservation is acknowledged as a viable investment, yielding tangible benefits for communities and creating compelling incentives for its preservation.
Landscapes and biodiversity are vital.
For communities. For wildlife. For a sustainable future.
That's why Landmark Foundation is here
Join Our Collective Call for Conservation
The Landmark Foundation stands at the forefront of conservation, championing the cause of preserving our planet's natural beauty and biodiversity. But the challenges we face are vast and varied, touching the lives of majestic leopards, the expanses of our last wild refuges, the integrity of our ecosystems, and the very air we breathe.
Our initiatives—ranging from combating direct threats to wildlife, expanding protected and conservation areas, promoting sustainable tourism and land uses, promoting wetland conservation and habitat rewilding, advocating for renewable energy, to advocacy for biodiversity governance—reflect a comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship.
Your signature bridges the gap between concern and action. It's a pledge to protect, preserve, and pass on a planet that flourishes for future generations of humans and wildlife. This isn't just about saving the leopards or safeguarding a wetland; it's about learning to coexist with nature and through changing the way we live and championing for the governance of our shared resources that we assist in securing a future where every living being can thrive.
